How to move safely amid the lingering pandemic

Moving to a new home under normal circumstances is stressful; more so if done during a pandemic. Apart from the standard planning and preparation that comes with moving house, there’s the added task of making sure you take the necessary precautions and follow safety protocols all throughout the move.

If your home search has led you to the communities of La Cañada Flintridge, Pasadena, La Crescenta, and other nearby areas in sunny California, moving here in the time of COVID will require the utmost care. To help you out, here are tips on how to transfer house safely and successfully.

DIY it

If you’re to apply social distancing to your move, you can consider moving the DIY way. Make it systematic by having a chronologically arranged list of move-related to-dos. That way, you minimize contact and maximize the time that you’re out for things like boxes and other packing supplies.

Or go contactless with a moving company

If you still need professional help for the move, you can seek the services of a trustworthy moving company in your area. Discuss contactless moves with them and ask for a virtual quote. Then, you can arrange for curbside pickup or delivery. Or, better yet, you can take videos of your belongings and send these over to them. They can do the packing for you even if you’re not around.

But if you choose to stay during the moving date, keep your distance while the professional movers do their work. Wear face masks at all times and forego the handshake. You can send a thank you note and a tip through a contactless platform to show your appreciation.

Choose plastic crates over cardboard

Opt for plastic crates over cardboard boxes. Made from high-impact materials, plastic crates are more durable and can easily be cleaned and disinfected. Clean

Clean and disinfect

The CDC has an updated set of guidelines on cleaning and disinfecting your home. Make this your own guide as you prepare for moving.

Be sure to stock up on cleaning supplies before moving as these will be important to you as you move into your new home. Don’t forget sanitizing materials like soap, alcohol, and hand sanitizer for everyone who’ll be involved with the move. Make the alcohol and sanitizer immediately available in strategic areas of the house like the entrance.

You can opt to clean and disinfect by yourself to save on money. Wipe and disinfect high-touch surfaces like light switches, doorknobs, and faucets. When you’re done, wash your hands thoroughly to take off chemicals from the cleaning products you were in contact with, as well as the dirt and microbes.

Delay if you’re unwell

If you or any member of your family display symptoms of the virus, best to delay your move. Contact a health professional and wait for a health clearance before you resume your relocation plans. Also, inform your mover about this. The moving company will be prudent enough to put extra safety protocols for the protection of their personnel.

Put off housewarming parties

Or, perhaps, have a housewarming party with only you and your family present. Consider prepping a video camera to capture the moment and to bring together friends and family virtually.
