Great Test Results
According to test results issued by the California Department of Education in October 2019, while only 40% of California’s public school students were proficient in math, the pupils in the La Cañada Unified School District achieved first, second, or third place in all grade levels tested. In fact, 85.19% of students in the school district meet or exceed the state’s math standards.

Elementary Math
In La Cañada, CA, all three elementary schools use Common Core-aligned mathematics programs. The textbook series, “Everyday Mathematics,” is taught from kindergarten to Grade 5, while Grade 6 students use the textbook, “Math in Focus: Singapore Math.” After-school math enrichment opportunities are also available for qualified students. If your child loves math, they can also join math competitions.
Middle School Math
Common Core-aligned math programs are also used in middle school. There are regular and advanced math pathways so that different students’ needs can be met. Pupils with special needs can join the Resource Specialist program. If your child is performing above their grade level, they may be invited to enroll in high school math courses, based on their test results. They can also continue to join math competitions.
High School Math
In La Cañada High School (LCHS), teens follow a traditional pathway blending Common Cores States Standards with Standards for Mathematical Practice.
New high school students may need to take a diagnostic exam in order to accurately gauge which math instruction is best suited for them.
All students are required to take math classes for at least two years and must earn at least 20 credits of math in order to graduate. This includes Math 1, which is equivalent to one year of Algebra. This is required by both state legislation and the school district board. Students can also challenge themselves by enrolling in Advanced Placement Calculus and Statistics courses.
For students who love math, there are after-school math programs, as well as math competitions.
