Pasadena is a popular destination for Los Angeles residents that want to get away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. It is, after all, a short drive from the city center. However, not a lot of people know about Pasadena’s neighboring areas. La Crescenta-Montrose, in particular, is a hidden gem that is a stone’s throw away from Pasadena, which is a short, 12-minute drive.

This unincorporated community in Los Angeles County occupies just 3.43 square miles, where more than 18,500 people live. While small in size, La Crescenta-Montrose is big on attractions.

If you and your family are looking to escape the city for a fun-filled weekend, below are some of the best things to do in La Crescenta-Montrose.

  • Explore Deukmejian Wilderness Park

One of the best things about the La Crescenta neighborhood is its outdoor and green spaces. Deukmejian Wilderness Park sprawls across 700 acres boasting multiple hiking trails, 12 acres of footpaths, picnic areas, and stunning views of the Crescenta Valley and the Los Angeles basin. For experienced hikers, the Deukmejian Wilderness Park has access to the highest point in Los Angeles: the top of Mount Lukens, which is more than 5,000 feet high.

  • Shop at Montrose Harvest Market

If outdoorsy activities don’t float your boat, the Montrose Harvest Market is open every Sunday (excluding select holidays) and a destination for the entire family. Aside from fresh produce and handcrafted items from local farmers and artisans, the Montrose Harvest Market features many open Montrose Shopping Park restaurants and businesses to enjoy.

  • Have tea at The T Room

With all that exploring sure to make you hungry, La Crescenta and Montrose have no shortage of dining options. For high tea or something lighter, tea time at The T Room is a must-visit. Located in the Montrose Shopping Park, The T Room is an authentic British tea parlor that hosts Prince & Princess Teas for the entire family to enjoy.

  • Learn and enjoy at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, or JPL, is a little farther away from La Crescenta-Montrose. Located in La Cañada Flintridge, JPL is NASA’s national research facility that hosts public lectures twice a month. If you like geeking out on everything space-related, this place is worth the detour.

  • Discover La Crescenta’s history at Pickens Canyon Park

Pickens Canyon Park is known as a repository for the neighborhood’s rich history. While there are no large playgrounds in this 8,000-square-foot park, it features displays that tell the story of La Crescenta’s interesting past. It’s a great place for a leisurely stroll as well.
