The Glendale Unified School District
Known to many as GUSD, this school network caters to around 26000 elementary, middle school, and high school students in Glendale. GUSD also has several schools scattered throughout the city that accommodate students from nearby communities like South Pasadena or Sunland/Tujunga.
You might be curious about why I have high regards for GUSD elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Well, GUSD is just one of the best. The distinctions from the US Department of Education and multiple California Distinguished Schools awards are testaments to its excellence.
GUSD’s Recreational After-School Program
One thing that sets Glendale Unified School District apart from others is that it has a holistic approach to education. That is why GUSD has the Recreational After-School Program (RAP) for elementary students or those in Grades 1-6.
RAP is supervised by school faculty or staff who provide activities that enable students to think practically, make independent decisions, and enhance their self-esteem. Here are other things that you should know about the RAP.
- Eligibility. If you live within the GUSD boundaries or if you have the necessary district permits, then you can enlist your elementary schooler to the RAP.
- Parent Involvement. Bringing the students to the RAP and fetching them afterward are the responsibilities of the parents or designated guardians. In case you cannot pick up your kid, you should notify the RAP Leader ahead of time.
- Attendance. The program is scheduled during school days, from dismissal time to 5:30 P.M. for the elementary students. They are expected to attend RAP every day. Should any circumstances arise and the students can not attend the program, their parents or guardians should inform the RAP Leader right away.
- Fees. An annual registration fee is required for students who would like to attend the RAP. The rate is fixed at $55 per week, and this covers materials and snacks. Considering the benefits of this program, I can say that this is just a small price to pay.
